Whether you’re looking for a shaver that’ll allow you to leave a little stubble, give you the perfect close shave, buzz your whole head or (ahem) landscape further south, you’ll find the right option.
We’ve tested rotary, foil shavers and hybrids to bring you a selection of the best shavers available.
If you’re buying one as a gift, there are a couple of things to bear in mind. Rotary shavers can be a good option for people with thicker stubble – but they demand a different shaving technique (in circles, as though you’re buffing the skin) than foil shavers, and users may have a preference between the two.
There’s also the matter of charging. Not all shavers have USB charging, which may mean bringing a bulky plug along when you travel, so keep that in mind while shopping.

The Philips OneBlade is as close to perfect as it gets. We can’t see any good reason not to recommend this razor to basically everyone.
With three stubble combs by default and the option for a dedicated body blade, this one razor can cover clean shaving, stylish stubble, or body grooming, all in an unbelievably portable form factor. It’s lightweight, powerful, and gives a great shave even on tricky areas like the jawline.
All that and it’s also one of the most affordable electric razors on the market. Although you’ll have to swap blades once every few months, at almost £10/$10 a pop, that still leaves it cheaper than most shaving solutions.
Bear in mind that there are now two models of the OneBlade: the original and the OneBlade Pro 360. There are different variants of each, including a connected model and models with different accessories and add-ons. You can see the different variants at Philips.

The Braun Series 7 has a more reasonable price point than the flagship Series 9. It lacks the bells and whistles but has many of the same advantages.
It’s light (185g), ergonomic and has three flexible blades. It provides 24k cuts per minute, and three shaving elements with a 360-degree adaptive head system. It can be used wet or dry.
Its LED display shows battery level, plus indicators for the travel lock, if the head needs replacing or the shaver needs cleaning, and if the shaver is plugged in properly.
It takes an hour to charge and will deliver 50 minutes of shaving time, with a quick charge option to give you enough power for a single shave.
All Series 7 models feature the same shaver but different model numbers mean different accessories, so it’s worth browsing to get the add-ons you want.

3. Remington Limitless X9 shaver – Best Rotary Shaver

Pros
- 360 PivotBall design
- Attachable trimmer with comb
- Battery indicator
- Quiet in use
Cons
- Learning curve for foil shavers
- Can initially nip
- No power adaptor
Price When Reviewed:£99.99

If you have thicker stubble, a rotary shaver could be the right option for you and there’s a lot to like about Remington’s flagship model. It’s a handsome shaver that comes with a trimmer attachment and a travel bag. It has some great features as well: it learns how long it takes you to shave and the battery indicator will then be able to tell you how many shaves you have left before you need to recharge. It takes 90 minutes to charge and from that yu’ll get 60 minutes of use. There’s a fast charging option as well for a single, emergency shave. It’s quiet in use and waterproof as well.
In our test, however, we found that the shaver nipped damp skin. Remington says that this can occur when someone is learning a rotary shaving technique after using a foil shaver. Bear it in mind though: this shaver may be best appreciated by someone who’s comfortable with a rotary.

4. Braun All-in-one Trimmer 7 – Most Comprehensive Shaver & Trimmer

Pros
- Precision trim and shaver heads
- Body groomer head
- Wet & dry use
Cons
- Two-pin shaver plug
- Narrow hair combs
- Hair combs need mid-trim sweep
Price When Reviewed:RRP: £74.99
Best Prices Today:
For a reasonable price, this Braun will cover all of your shaving and trimming needs, on your head, face, ears, nose and body.
The kit contains a cordless trimmer with a detachable trimmer head, eight further attachments that will either trim or shave hair, and a Gillette Fusion razor with two five-blade cartridges. Plus, there’s a charging stand, dusting comb, cable and accessories bag.
A full charge takes an hour and from that, you’ll get 100 minutes of trimming time. There’s a quick charge option as well, to give you enough power for a quick trim in a pinch.
You can use the trimmer and seven of the eight attachments wet or dry – you can’t use the body groomer head wet.
You probably won’t use all of the attachments but there’s enough here that you’ll find the right trimmers for all of your needs. However, this is for short hair only and anything over 2cm will need another tool.

5. Remington G4 Graphite – Best Budget Trimmer

Pros
- Plenty of attachments
Cons
- 3-pin plug charging
Price When Reviewed:£39.99
Best Prices Today:
If you’re looking for a trimmer that can do just about anything but you don’t want to overspend, the Remington G4 Graphite fits the bill perfectly.
The design and build is solid and the interchangeable head system works brilliantly, allowing you to swap between different attachments in seconds. The G4 comes with a wide range of different options including a mini foil shaver and detail trimmer. Combine them all and you can achieve just about any style.
Performance is excellent and battery life is good too, although we would like a power lead that plugs into a shaver point rather than a three pin plug.

6. Braun Series 9 – Best Premium Foil Shaver

- High-quality foil shaver
- 60 minute battery life
Cons
- Bulky clean & charge station is unnecessary

Price comparison from Backmarket
The Braun Series 9 is a great premium foil shaver that’s really only let down by its price. Its four cutting elements, ten tilt settings, and an hour’s battery will be overkill for many, but if your hair grows thick and fast enough that you need a close shave daily, this will get the job done well, and quickly, so it’s easy to recommend.
The Clean & Charge station, which comes with the Series 9, is a little more questionable. It’s undeniably a convenient way to clean your razor, using an alcohol solution to automatically clean, lubricate, and dry the shaving head. It saves any worries about long-term dirt build-up as well. Still it’s a little noisy and takes some time to get the job done. Plus you can’t use it after a wet shave.
Plus, it’s bulky, ugly, and expensive – both up-front and over time – so it’s only worth it for those with capacious bathroom cabinets.

It’s IPX5 water resistant so can be used in the shower, but also works fine if used dry.

The Remington Heritage Foil Shaver undeniably looks the part with its stunning retro style, but the question is whether you will after using it.
Unfortunately whether it’s down to design, power, or simply sharpness this razor simply doesn’t cut it, with inconsistent results and real difficulty shaving under the jaw.
That’s a particular shame since it’s so strong on looks, charging, and portability, thanks to the compact build, one-hour battery life, and two-hour charge time over Micro-USB.
This could still be a good choice for anyone who wants a snazzy shaver and doesn’t mind making a few extra passes every time in return. Otherwise, you can get better results for less elsewhere. Oh, and bear in mind that some models are limited edition Manchester United branded – don’t buy for City fans.
