Why can't i catch stripers? ›

1) Get out early and stay out late

There are stripers to catch. You cannot catch fish consistently if you don't fish while the sun is down. The simplest and most scientific answer I can give you for this is that bass like to feed in low and transitioning light conditions.

Trolling successfully takes skill. General speed for bass trolling ranges between 2.5 and 3 knots, as the fish tend to like a slower presentation where they can lunge with a swoop of their powerful broomtail to make the hit. The perfect imitation of a herring or bunker baitfish is the Bomber CD30.

Often, throughout the Atlantic region, anglers can find the most success with striped bass ranging from the beginning of September till the end of April. Like most fish, a striper's appetite is dialed back during the winter from the lack of available bait and the lower water temperatures inducing lethargy.

Bunker (Menhaden)

Bunker is hands-down the best bait for Striped Bass (we'll lump in alewife here in freshwater, as you can use them in similar ways). Cast them on simple weighted rigs, drift them, or cut them up for chum. The simplest tactic is to chop the tail off and liveline it in a school.

Striped bass prefer water temperatures between 55 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. They are most active during periods of low light, such as dawn and dusk, when they come into shallow waters to feed. During the day, they tend to stay in deeper water.

A study performed at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science showed that a striper's vision is sensitive to a wide range of colors from blue to red, but is most sensitive to yellow and chartreuse. Many baitfish, like these alewives, cast a yellow sheen when the sun is low in the sky.

I use 20 lb. in very shallow situations with clear water since stealth is more important in these conditions. I switch to 30 and 40lb when casting or vertical jigging around gnarly structure, as well as when using heavier lures and targeting bigger fish, but there are times when I will drop down to 20 lb.
